"Just as nature needs balance, people need balance."

"Just as nature needs balance,

people need balance."

Anne Wilson Schaef

Today in Heart to Heart we reviewed the meaning of the following virtues:

  • Assertiveness
  • Compassion
  • Courtesy
  • Flexibility
  • Moderation
  • Modesty
  • Self-discipline

The children were eager to dramatize an example of each virtue during our group discussion.

Our session continued as the children watched the beginning of The Three Bears.  They had to identify the virtue that was being shown in the story.  The focus was on the bowls of porridge.  I had the children notice the "too hot" " too cold" and "just right" concept in the story text.  I explained that today's virtue is moderation.  Moderation is creating a balance in your life.  It is having or doing enough of something – not too much, not too little, but what's just right for you.  Moderation is being in charge of your time and using self-discipline to keep from doing too much or too little.  Without moderation, we can overdo things like talking, eating, watching television, etc.  You practice moderation by knowing your own limits and what you need to function at your best.

Suggestion – Design Your Days

Create a "mind map" of the way you spend your time and notice how balanced it is.  Put plus marks from 1 to 5 by the amount of time you spend working or studying, helping in the house, playing, spending time with friends or on the phone, TV or computer time, exercise and rest.  In which areas do you need to spend less time?  In which areas do you need to spend more?

Do everything in moderation,
