Where to stay in the Chamonix Valley
Chamonix Mont Blanc, nestled between Geneva, Switerland, Cormayeur Italy, and the rest of the French Alps is become one of the most famous ski stations and mountain resorts in Europe if not in the World. Why? Mainly because of the Mont Blanc itself, and because of the excellent steep runs it boasts on off the Aiguille de Midi in Chamonix, and the Grands Montets in Argentière . ‘Cham' has become a Mecca for Brits, Norwegians, and Swedes, and the French community has pretty much sold up to these northern ‘invaders' as chalets have been sold, and the real estate market has become bloated thanks to the beautiful Swiss style luxury chalets.
Where should you stay when coming on your ski or summer holidays to Chamonix? There are 5 alpine villages in the Chamonix Valley: Les Houches, Chamonix, Les Bois, Argentière and Le Tour. Each village has its own mountain charm, but obviously some are more suitable for family holidays, whereas others are more appropriate for couples.
Les Houches France is a quaint village in the Haute Savoie, 5 miles from Chamonix town and has a real family feel. There is a great ski resort at les Houches especially good in bad snow, and wind conditions, and has an impressive situation under the Mont Blanc herself. The skiing at les Houches offers a mix of gentle tree runs as well some steeper runs including the Kandahar World Downhill Run - raced every 2 years. Les Houches is very popular with families, and has a mix of really rustic chalets as well as some relaxed restaurants such as the amazing Gorges de la Diosaz overlooking some of the most beautiful gorges in France, Les Vieilles Luges and the popular Hotel du Bois. There is not much going on after dinner, so if you are up for late night fun head to Chamonix.
Chamonix is the epicenter of the Chamonix Valley and has two steep mountains rising up on both sides: the Brevent, and the Aiguille de Midi. Both have outrageous off piste runs including the ENSA couloirs, and the Valley Blanche derivatives including the front face of the Mont Blanc. There are beginner and intermediate runs, but Les Bois might be better for beginners closer to Flégère. The nightlife and restaurants are 5 star in Chamonix with a large seasonnaire scene around the Chamonix Sud area, and also some great bear and restaurants in the Rue des Moulins including the incredible Munchie. Generally with the access problems Chamonix is better for the youth and the couples rather than families and parties continue until late.
As you head up the valley to Argentière , there is a beautiful place to spend your Chamonix holidays in the area of Les Bois. Les Bois is the area close to the Flegere lift and the golf course and is home to many of Chamonix's luxury chalets. It is not just Les Bois, there is also Les Nantes. While one might feel this area is in the no man land between Chamonix and Argentière , the area is open, calm, set in a pine forest. The chalets are stunning and there are some of the most expensive places to stay in the area. Flegere is the sunniest resort with lost of reds, and blues as well as some excellent off piste and randonnee routes. Nightlife is very restricted with one hotel restaurant - the Hotel Eden. The MBC micro brasserie and Le Robinson are not far but you have to drive.
Climbing towards Swizerland, you meet Argentière one of the most beautiful villages in the Alps nessling under the Argentière Glacier and the Grands Montets boasting runs of 2km vertical. Argentière is fun, and the balance between seasonaires, tourists and locals seems to be just right. People are here mainly for the skiing, but there are some great restaurants, and bars to keep the holiday sport and lively. Luxury chalets in Argentière. are found in the old village on the old road to Le Tour. The village has an amazing setting in the forest of Argentière with the glacier retreating just behind. Argentière ski resort has some excellent off-piste runs, but has a lot of great reds/blues. There are also beginner runs in Argentière . Argentière is great for everybody.
As you head North West you reach the end of the valley: Le Tour. Le Tour is a round bump of snow at the summit of the valley, and has an excellent ski resort with trees and fantastic terrain. There is nothing really in Le Tour except skiing and a bar open in the day so if you are not happy spending the ski holiday in the chalet, then maybe better in Argentière or Chamonix. Le Tour is good for families and groups of friends that want to make lots of noise and get to the mountain early. The mountain is great for learning, beginners, and intermediate borders; skiers find it a bit shallow.
This article explores the Chamonix Valley, and which villages offer what advantages, and benefits so you can really make a good choice of where to stay if you are renting a chalet, accommodation or apartment in the Chamonix Valley.
