FLOWER ARRANGING FOR BEGINNERS
A first-timer could be forgiven for being just a little daunted by the idea of arranging flowers as there are so many styles and shapes to consider – tall, triangular, trailing, posy, vertical, crescent, s-shaped, eastern and horizontal … and that’s just a start!.
It can even be a little tricky taking a professionally arranged bouquet of flowers from a florist and putting it into a container at home. Ever had a brilliant bunch turn into a messy mix when you transfer it from its gorgeous wrapping into the vase at home?
No need to get your knickers in a knot – or should that be fingers in a fix?. Follow these simple tips and you’ll have an original and beautiful creation that will liven up any space. And once you’ve mastered the basics, throw the rules out of the window and experiment. Practice and confidence go hand-in-hand, so enjoy creating beautiful things.
Factors to think about are balance, texture, scale, accent, unity, harmony and space. Those are just fancy words for ensuring that your composition looks good!.
First up, choose flowers you love. You can use anything – from an eclectic bunch of different flowers to single varieties. Complementary colours work best together. The aim is equilibrium where flowers don’t dominate each other. Another general rule of thumb is to use an odd number of flowers as a starting point.
Visualise your creation in the home/office etc and think about the angle from which it will be viewed. For a corner situation, you may consider a tall, dramatic arrangement and for a centerpiece, an elongated or round one would look beautiful. For inspiration, you may like to look at interior decorating magazines, books or trawl some websites of local Perth florists before you set off to buy flowers or pick from your garden.
Select a container or vase. The flowers that you’ve chosen and the location of the arrangement will dictate the size and shape of the container. There’s no limit to what you can use – from old tins and jars, bottles, baskets, glasses, jugs, teapots or pedestals. A narrow vase is good for tall arrangements, while a short wide one is good for a full arrangement. Always consider proportion when deciding on the vase.
To start, arrange the focal flowers (the most eye-catching ones) in the centre of the vase. The general idea is to have the longest stem around one and a half times the height of the vase. Then, flowers are added in order of size, with foliage inserted last. You should cut stems at varying lengths to create depth in the arrangement. Fuller flowers generally look better when they are cut a few centimeters above the container, whereas narrower flowers and buds look good when the stems are longer.
Fillers or foliage are used to fill any holes and to create texture, width and height. A filler flower looks wonderful if it has small blossoms and small leaves (eg gypsophila). The foliage should ideally be at the centre and back of the arrangement in order to keep the balance.
One florist in Perth, Airport Florist, advises ‘floral artists’ to keep walking away from their work to make sure it looks good from all angles. Just as an artist would evaluate their work in progress to check on the light, the look, the perspective etc – it’s the same with flower arranging. And hey, you’re the artist here!
So much for the guidelines, there’s only one rule you have to remember and that’s to have FUN!. And if you’re lucky enough to receive a flower delivery from a Perth online florist, take a moment to have a good look at how they’ve done it – and get inspiration from the professionals!.
