How Do I Rid My Home of Ants?
What an amazing creature the little ant is! Over 8000 different species exist in the world. Ants are even mentioned in the Bible as teaching us lessons about working hard, planning ahead, and preparing for the future. They can certainly teach us much.
However, we don’t want the classroom in our children’s play areas, in the cupboard, or, in fact, in the house at all. Yet, how to get rid of ants often seems to be an enigma.
Let’s discuss some safe and reliable methods of keeping ants out of the house. There are things we can do without chemicals. Clean up food items carefully, don’t leave sweet containers out, vacuum regularly, caulk any known gaps where ants could crawl in. Ant traps can be purchased locally and can help small problems. Also sticky strips catch the ant as it crawls across it in child-free areas. But these don’t deal with the root of the problem nor major infestations.
To really succeed, you must get rid of the queen. If she is dead or relocated, the colony is gone. But this requires you to first locate the nest. To do this, track the ants movement. See if you can detect their travel patterns once they find some food. Check for signs where ants converge in large numbers.
Once the nest is located, it is time to remove it. Spraying will probably be necessary to do this. These are some common outdoor nest insecticides: bifenthrin as granules, carbaryl as a liquid or granules, permethrin as a liquid or granules, cyfluthrin as granules, and acephate as a liquid. Make sure the nest is thoroughly treated as ants can dig deep into the ground and remain unaffected by some poisons. Generally gasoline, fire, water do not eliminate the problem.
Plan B is to spray the exterior of the house with contact insecticides. Some common ones are permethrin as a liquid or granules, bifenthrin as a liquid, carbaryl as a liquid or granules, cyfluthrin as granules, and deltamethrin as a dust. The size of your house may necessitate your calling on a pest control firm to do this for you. This may also be necessary if the nest is located in a wall or other hidden place.
Bate poisons may also solve your problem. These are poisons that smell like food to the ant. They therefore take them back to the colony and share them with everyone. If this includes the queen, your problem is over. Here are some common bate poisons: sulfluramid, abamectin, disodium octaborate, Fipronil, orthoboric acid, and propoxur. Be sure to follow the instructions on the label.
Of course, you will want to be careful using poisons, especially around children and pets. So if the problem is serious, you will probably want to call on a reliable exterminator. These people are trained to know just how to use insecticides in a way that is safe for you and your family.
