Germany 2009 Proving to Be a Great Vintage
While the 2009 winemaking season produced significantly less wine in Germany, the quality of the wine produced has been nothing short of spectacular. The 2009 vintage is being met with nothing but the highest reviews, and many are comparing the quality to the excellent vintage produced in 2007. Much of the wine has an alcohol level between 12.5 and 13.5 percent, and the acidity in the grapes proved to be spectacular for winemaking. 2009 marks the first time in nine years that vintners were allowed to ad acidity to wines if needed due to the high alcohol content of wines made in the southern Baden region.
The amount of wine produced from the 2009 German growing season is expected to be around ten percent less than in other years, due in large part to cold and rainy weather during the flowering period. This weather resulted in fewer grapes, and those produced were much smaller than usual. For winemakers and wine lovers alike, however, the weather during the growing and ripening seasons was optimal, which means that the grapes produced offer the top quality and the best flavoring. Because of this, the wine produced is simply spectacular.
Experts predict that despite the low quantity of wine produced in 2009 throughout the wine growing regions of Germany and despite the fact that the vintage is actually one of the best that the region has seen in a few years, the price should remain fairly steady. The managing director of the German Wine Institute said that 2009 would be a great opportunity for wine enthusiasts because "The 2009 wines of all our wine regions offer superb quality, or value, for money." This increased pleasure to price ratio will certainly draw in big sales numbers for German winemakers and will likely be well appreciated by wine lovers.
While Riesling and Pinot are the most common wines in the German vintage, the director of the GWI feels confident that critics and wine enthusiasts will be surprised by the quality of the red wines in the 2009 vintage. Regardless of which wines end up with the best tasting reviews, there is no denying that the 2009 German vintage is going to be a big seller. Rarely does a year come up that affords the region the chance to make such consistently excellent wine, and enthusiasts will certainly want to get their hands on the best vintage the region has seen in years.
