How Live Corals and Sea Anemones Get Along
With a saltwater aquarium, anemones such as the Bubble Tip anemone along with corals from the Large Polyp Stony coral family can make beautiful additions to the tank. In fact, many people prefer live corals or anemones to fish, although there are many fish that can also live peacefully with either of these sea creatures. It is important to note, however, that live coral does not necessarily get along with all the anemones, so you will want to keep certain types separate from one another. Sea anemones such as the Bubble Tip anemone, Carpet anemones, Filter Feeder anemones and Rose-Bulb Tip anemones are common in the saltwater aquarium trade. Contrary to what many people believe, these are not corals, nor are they related to corals. They are part of the phylum Cnidaria family, which also includes jellyfish and some other interesting species. Like live coral, they have symbiotic algae on their bodies called zooxanthellae that extract energy from the light and provide food created from the byproducts of that energy capture. The biggest difference between anemones and corals is the fact that corals can move around constantly, while anemones will generally only move until they find a spot they want to stick around in. The reason that live corals and sea anemones should be kept in separate tanks is that the tentacles of an anemone are filled with stinging cells that they use to capture their prey or defend themselves from attacks. They often sting corals that they come into contact with in the aquarium. Several species of saltwater fish have a symbiotic relationship with sea anemones, though, including anemone shrimps, members of the clownfish family, certain crabs and damselfish. So it's fine to keep these species together, and it's also fine to keep a variety of corals and fish together. Whenever you're buying corals, anemones or saltwater fish, just make sure you know that they'll get along. Otherwise, it could be a deadly situation.
