Absinthe the Green Fairy or La Fee Verte
The Green Fairy Absinthe is a drink that has mystified generations of drinkers throughout history. From humble beginnings that saw it being developed as tonic in the 18th century it today commands respect as the most famous and controversial drinks of all times.
Having an anise flavor Absinthe with an alcohol content of 45 to 75% is considered a very strong spirit. In French it is called "La Fee Verte" or "Green Fairy" because of its emerald green color. Herbs are used to make this distilled liquor. Wormwood, fennel and green aniseed are the herbs that matter the most. Hwnri-Louis Pernod was the first person to commercially distill Absinthe. he used herbs such as hyssop, nutmeg, lemon balm,veronica, juniper, dittany and star ansie to produce the original Pernod Absinthe recipe. There was a thought that herbs such as wormwood, nutmeg and calamus, which only some manufacturers used, were psychoactive. Herbs in Absinthe release essential oils and this causes the louche effect when water is poured over the sugar on the Absinthe spoon. The oils in Absinthe are not soluble and hence it louches or clouds.

Thujone, a chemical present in wormwood was blamed for the psychedelic effects of drinking the Green Fairy. THC in cannabis was equated as very similar to Thujone. Thujone is present in very small quantity in Absinthe, alcohol and ethanol are the main ingredients. Scientific research has shown that thujone in Absinthe is not as dangerous, it is as safe as any high alcohol content drink. Articles and studies have been done on this subject.
